Settlement Reached in Brooklyn Adult Home Lawsuit

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit concerning an old age home in Brooklyn. The former operators of the facility were charged with forcing the home's residents to live in deplorable conditions.

In 2002, New York's attorney general's office claimed Seaport Manor failed to investigate the death of a resident who died when her clothing caught fire. Inspectors later found residents' rooms infested with mice, cockroaches and flies.

Under the settlement, the home's operators are barred from owning or operating an adult care facility. They will pay $100,000 in restitution to the residents and $49,000 in penalties and interest to New York's Health Department.
