NYC 2030: Planning for 1 Million New New Yorkers

New York, NY —

By the year 2030, there may be 9 million people in New York City, an increase of almost 900,000 residents, enough to populate the city of Detroit. Those New Yorkers will be consuming more water and power, waiting longer for trains and buses, and paying more money for the limited supply of housing-- unless the city starts some serious planning.

Mayor Bloomberg has created a new office of Long Term Planning and Sustainability, and he gave a speech at the Queens Museum of Art about the group's mission. WNYC’s Amy Eddings talks to WNYC's Beth Fertig about the reasons behind the mayor’s initiative.
