NJ Debate on Gay Unions Focuses on Word "Marriage"

New Jersey lawmakers are set to start debate today on giving committed same-sex couples the same legal protections enjoyed by married opposite-sex couples.

Much of the debate in the Assembly Judiciary Committee could focus on the word "marriage." The bill labels the relationships "civil unions." The state Supreme Court has said gay couples are entitled to the benefits of marriage. But the justices left it to lawmakers to decide what to call it.

Some clergy, politicians and others opposed to gay unions are pushing for an "equal benefits" law, that would grant the benefits of marriage to people who live together.
