Call for Suspension of NYPD Vice Operations

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

In the wake of the fatal police shooting of Sean Bell, 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care are calling for police to suspend all vice enforcement operations until some new procedures are put in place.

REPORTER: Noel Leader, a spokesman for the group, said in order to blend in while undercover, officers are allowed two drinks while working. Leader said undercover officers should carry portable breathalyzer devices and be subject to random tests.

LEADER: So if the officer is partaking in, is consuming alcohol and then unfortunately has to get involved in deadly physical force there's a problem.

REPORTER: He also called for undercover cars to be equipped with lights and sirens and for a minimum of 10 people to make up each investigative team.

The Police Department hasn't commented on the requests.
