Benefield Thanks Sharpton Upon Discharge from Hospital

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Trent Benefield, who was in the car with Sean Bell a week and a half ago when police fired 50 shots at them, is out of the hospital. Bell was killed. Benefield and another man were injured.

Benefield says he'd like to thank the Reverend Al Sharpton and the community for sticking by him. He didn't say anything about the police shooting or the investigation when he appeared at a brief news conference in a wheelchair. Sharpton and some members of the City Council attended the conference.

Sharpton says there will be a rally today at 1 Police Plaza in lower Manhattan. In other developments, the New York Civil Liberties Union called on the City Council to form an independent board to assess all police shootings and recommend reforms in training and tactics.
