Roosevelt Island Tram Nearly Ready to Reopen

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

The Roosevelt Island tram is getting closer to reopening. Today there will be a mock rescue drill.

Engineers have already completed repairs on the aging system that broke down in April, stranding dozens of people over the East River for up to 12 hours. The tram has been out of service for the past four months and -- to make matters worse for the Island's roughly ten thousand residents -- the MTA has been routinely shutting down subway service to Roosevelt Island to do tunnel work.

Once today's drill is completed, only one step will remain before the tram is up and running: approval from the State Department of Labor.
