Auto Shop Fire Spews Black Smoke Seen for Miles

Firefighters spent the better part of last night fighting a massive blaze in the Bronx at an auto body and parts shop. Officials are investigating the cause.

The thick black smoke could be seen as far away as New Jersey. It took more than 140 firefighters several hours to get the blaze under control. It started around 6 last night at Apex Auto Parts on Bronx River Avenue. Neighbors call the place a junkyard. FDNY officials say all the stacked up cars hindered efforts to put out the fire. Residents had to leave their homes for several hours.

The smoke even forced 8 Amtrak trains, which run on tracks above the shop, to be delayed causing a backup along the northeast corridor.

Officials say there were no serious injuries. 4 people including 2 firefighters and one police officer were treated for smoke inhalation.
