Unions Fight Plan to Drop Security Checkpoints

A plan to get rid of manned security checkpoints at some of the city's bridges and tunnels is drawing criticism from some union members.

The MTA's budget for next year includes a plan to replace 18 bridge and tunnel officers with electronic cameras and alarms. Some of the affected security checkpoints could be the Midtown Tunnel and the Verrazano Bridge, both attractive terror targets.

The extra security measures were put in place following the September 11th attacks. The Bridge and Tunnel Officers Benevolent Association says the proposed changes could put the city and commuters at risk. But Mayor Bloomberg says it could be a good idea and points out that the NYPD has already done the same thing in areas where the department feels is appropriate.

The MTA votes on next years budget in December.
