School Disruption Rates Up In NY Schools

New York, NY —

Reports of violent and disruptive incidents are up in schools throughout New York. The state education department released new data showing more than 190-thousand incidents reported during the 2004-2005 school year compared to about 121-thousand the previous year. The report was made following an audit last year by the state Controller that found a significant number of unreported incidents.

In New York City, the mayor and the chancellor say the actual numbers look higher than previous years because of the state's new reporting system. There were more than 17-thousand minor altercations, alone. There were also more than 22-hundred cases of weapons possession. However, the Bloomberg administration says school violence is down, overall this year.
