Legislature Debates Pataki's Cuts to Budget

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

It's now up to the Legislature to decide what to do about Governor Pataki's almost $3 billion worth of cuts to its proposed budget. Legislative leaders say they have not ruled out taking the governor to court. But Pataki says some of his vetoes cannot be overridden.

REPORTER: In an effort to extend an olive branch Pataki says he is willing to work with lawmakers.

PATAKI : I think we have a workable budget that is fiscally sound for this year that does have things like record school aid and will sustain government thru 06-07. But we can do better, I am always hopeful and ready to work to do better.

REPORTER: Some of the major cuts included the centerpiece of the Legislature's plan -- a property tax rebate and a child tax credit. Pataki also cut $650 million in extra spending for Medicaid.
