Fresh Kills Landfill to Transform into Park

THe city has released a draft blueprint for turning the Fresh Kills landfill into a park. WNYC's Amy Eddings reports.

After two years of public meetings, the Department of City Planning has put out its vision for the world's largest landfill: A North Park, with creeks and wetlands, the entrance, and heart, of the park, at the confluence of two major creeks, with boating facilities, a great lawn, and a visitor's center, a south park, with horseback riding and soccer fields, a scenic drive to the east, and a huge earthwork monument to the Nine Eleven recovery effort at Fresh Kills.

Mayor Bloomberg says he hopes the proposal will become a model for land reclamation projects worldwide. The plan now undergoes environmental and land use reviews, starting in May.
