The person in charge of science education in New York City says science in the city is failing.
Dr. Julia Rankin, the department of education official who heads the city's science programs, gave her own program a failing grade of 55 at a City Council committee hearing and said the state of science education in the city is horrendous.
Council members agree, saying that because of the city's push to improve test scores in literacy and math, science had been put on the back burner. Members said the school system is lacking qualified science teachers and laboratory space. Dr. Rankin says there is much more work ahead, but in the past year, more labs have been built and there has been more professional development for teachers.
