Pols Argue Over Freedom Tower Delays
New York, NY —
Mayor Bloomberg says subsidies are not an option to pay for increased security at the Freedom Tower. Developer Larry Silverstein reportedly wants subsidies to pay for added costs following NYPD comments that the current design was vulnerable to a terrorist attack.
Construction on the site could be delayed up to a year. But Mayor Bloomberg says making the tower safe is more important than getting it done on time.
BLOOMBERG: This is a tough thing to do. And New York City and New York State is not going to walk away from its responsibility to get it right. And I can't help you if it doesn't get done quickly.
State assembly speaker Sheldon Silver said Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Pataki have been distracted by the proposed West Side Jets stadium. He said there has been a "total lack of leadership" planning ground zero.
