Hailing from the diminutive South American country of Uruguay, vocalist Sabrina Lastman seasons her jazz with a rhythm that is still novel to most globe-trotting New Yorkers. Candombe, the sound of Afro-Uruguayan rhythms played on batteries of big barrel drums, is woven into many of Lastman’s compositions. On “Color de Arena,” Lastman skips the candombe-jazz in favor of contemplative balladry, gracing the track with a full-throated vibrato vocal reminiscent of tango singers her country is famous for.
