The population at large probably finds chiptune music grating at best, but for the generation that spent their youth hopelessly lost in late '80s Nintendo games, eight-bit bleeps are wondrous morsels of sonic nostalgia. Anamanaguchi is the most successful band to come out of the chiptune movement, in which Nintendos and Game Boys are hacked and transformed into simple digital synthesizers. The band got a boost after it was selected to provide the soundtrack for the video game based on the recent hit film “Scott Pilgrim vs the World.” This track, “Aurora,” perfectly illustrates the secret to Anamanaguchi’s success: balancing those lo-fi bleeps with swirls of wispy guitars and engaging compositions.
