Cellist Abel Selaocoe is based in Manchester, England, but he’s originally from South Africa, and the tradition of reaching back to the ancestors for help and inspiration is a central feature of his own compositions, and even affects how he plays classical works for the cello. In addition to playing the instrument, Selaocoe often sings and performs with an ensemble of traditional vocalists and percussionists. In one of his recordings, he plays a 300-year-old work by the French composer Marin Marais, while improvising a vocal line at the same time.
