The life and work of the Nigerian bandleader Fela Kuti was an unlikely topic for a Broadway musical, but not only was Fela! a hit, it also was a Tony-award winner. A lot of critics gave credit to the show’s star, the singer and actor Sahr Ngaujah, for bringing Fela the man to life, even as the band brought Fela’s music to its usual fever pitch. Now, Sahr Ngaujah, and other special guests are teaming up with the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to do some big band arrangements of Fela Kuti’s groove-based Afropop. 

Sahr Ngaujah and the cast of the musical Fela! along with the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra perform some of Fela’s songs Friday and Saturday nights, Jan. 25-26, at Symphony Space.
