Alejandra Ribera: Sultry Polylingual Pop From North Of The Border

Her father was Argentinian, her mother was Scottish. She's Canadian. She sings in Spanish, French, and English. Words like "cosmopolitan" and "eclectic" seem permanently attached to her repertoire. Singer and guitarist Alejandra Ribera's music lives comfortably at the confluence of her many cultural inputs -- an easier-said-than-done feat that often waters down the work of artists seeking to make "eclectic" records.

Ribera's first record, 2009's Navigator Navigather, demonstrated her incisive lyricism and catholic tastes, strengths that have been duly reinforced on 2014's La boca. Her ability to globalize themes and ideas without watering them down -- concentrated most forcefully in the yearning single "I Want" -- recently earned Ribera the prestigious SOCAN Songwriting Prize in Canada. And her live shows -- for which the sultry singer occasionally wraps herself in cigar-smoke -- have been known to move audiences to tears. 

Alejandra Ribera visits the Soundcheck studio to demonstrate the lyrical and melodic chops that are quickly making her a sensation at home and, of course, abroad.
