Columbia professor and film historian, Annette Insdorf, explains her book, Cinematic Overtures: How to Read Opening Scenes, which makes the case for why the opening shots of any movie are key to understanding the film as a whole. Editors and writers from Gothamist's team join us to explain what stories they’ve been following. This week, we’re joined by Jake Offenhartz, Ben Yakas, and Jen Carlson. Saidiya Hartman, Guggenheim Fellow and Columbia University professor, discusses her new book, Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments: Intimate Histories of Social Upheaval.
