'CODA,' 'American Auto,' Arturo Schomburg's Birthday, Translating Olga Tokarczuk's 'The Books of Jacob,' Anticipated Translated Literature
The film “CODA” tells the story of Ruby Rossi, the only hearing member of her Gloucester family. The rest of the Rossi family relies on Ruby as an interpreter and as a deckhand on her family's fishing boat, but all Ruby wants to do is sing. We speak with writer and director Sian Heder, and Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin, who stars as Jackie Rossi in the film. “CODA” is available to stream now on Apple TV Plus, and has been nominated for two SAG Awards.
"American Auto" is the latest workplace comedy from writer and showrunner Justin Spitzer and stars Ana Gasteyer as the new CEO of a Detroit-based car company. Both will join to talk about the show and it's take on corporate culture in advance of its premiere on NBC's Peacock streaming channel.
Today is the birthday of a man who gave our city one of its finest institutions: Arturo Alfonso Schomburg. His life's work led to the creation of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. In order to learn more about the man behind the National Landmark, we are joined by Dr. Vanessa K. Valdés, author of Diasporic Blackness: the Life and Times of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg.
One of the most anticipated books of the year is the English translation of Nobel winner Olga Tokarczuk’s magnum opus, The Books of Jacob. Jennifer Croft, her longtime translator, joins us to discuss the novel, her career, and the art of translation. Croft was awarded the 2018 Man Booker International Prize, alongside Tokarczuk, for her translation of Flights.
