New Words in the Dictionary, 'Moonage Daydream,' David LaChapelle, Montclair Art Museum Week, artist Kenny Rivero's New Exhibition

David Bowie

Shrinkflation, subvariant, baller, and even pumpkin spice are now officially in the dictionary. We speak to Merriam-Webster's Editor at Large, Peter Sokolowski about how words are chosen and take listener calls.

"Moonage Daydream" is a new documentary about David Bowie drawing from millions of assets and tracing the life of the enigmatic rock star. Director Brett Morgen joins to discuss the film, which opens in theaters September 16.

As a photographer, David LaChapelle's images have defined pop culture since the 90's, whether through the classic image of Tupac in a bathtub, the official album cover for Travis Scott's Astroworld, or photos of models such as Amanda Lepore and Angelina Jolie. While he is known for his iconic celebrity portraits, his art also makes social commentary on capitalism and celebrity, sometimes described as "kitsch pop surrealism." The photographer's largest retrospective ever is now on view in a museum-wide exhibition at Fotografiska New York until January 8. LaChapelle joins us alongside Amanda Hajjar, founding director of exhibitions for Fotografiska, to discuss the show.

We continue our week-long look at the Montclair Art Museum’s offerings this fall. Today we speak talk about the exhibition, Transformed: Objects Reimagined by American Artists, which has been up for a while, but the pieces are always evolving. It's inspired by a 1964 Jasper Johns quote: “Take an  object. Do something to it. Do something else to it.” The show features sixty works, Gail Stavitsky, chief curator of The Montclair Art Museum, joins to discuss.

The Dominican-American artist Kenny Rivero is showing his newest work at a solo exhibition at Charles Moffett in Tribeca. Born in Washington Heights and now based in the Bronx, Rivero creates with painting, collage, drawing, and sculpture to engage with his Dominican identity and family history, as well as using his background as a trained musician to inform his creative process. Rivero joins us to discuss the show, called Steward: The Ballad of a Super Super, which is on display at Charles Moffett until October 22.
