There are classic New York City holiday traditions, from the Rockefeller Christmas Tree to seeing the "Nutcracker." Then there are smaller, more local-centric traditions like checking out the Dyker Heights Christmas lights or going to look at the Macy's window displays afterhours. New York Magazine editor Chris Bonanos joins to talk about both and we take your calls about your favorite NYC holiday traditions.

Hanukkah begins this weekend! Rabbi Matthew Green from Congregation Elohim in Brooklyn joins us to talk about the history of the holiday and why it especially resonates this year. And we’ll take your calls about what Hannukkah means to you and what your favorite traditions are.

The annual "Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes" runs all through this month. Two Rockettes, Jaclyn di Nicola and Mia Wilson, join us to talk about this year's show.

It's gift-buying season, and a good time to shop local. Jenna Milliner-Waddell, associate editor at The Strategist, recommends some holiday pop-ups and markets around New York City.

As we approach the holidays, we discuss tips to make the season easier for those who plan on hosting family and friends over for a meal. Foodie and content creator Xenia Zayas, also known as Chef Zee, joins us to discuss tips for cooking for large groups of people, share a few recipes and appliances that have made life easier.

Dolly Parton's America

At the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, we drop in on a history class called “Dolly Parton’s America.” (We borrowed the name for our series!) Taught by Dr. Lynn Sacco, the class is filled with college students who grew up in rural Appalachia, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college.  Dr Sacco gives the class an assignment: Write an essay that answers the question “What is Dolly Parton’s America?” Lurking just behind that question are thornier ones about Southern shame and identity and hillbillies and football and...well, Dolly.  Is Dolly helping or hurting us? The class splits down the middle.    Editor’s Note:  We made two corrections to this podcast, originally released on December 3.  In referring to the location of the Battle of Blair Mountain, we changed “Southwestern Virginia” to “West Virginia.” And on the origin of the term redneck, we inserted narration that makes clear that the etymology of the term goes back farther than the Battle of Blair Mountain.
