Before releasing a solo album in 2021, Allison Russell was already known as a fine singer and songwriter for bands like Our Native Daughters and the duo called Birds of Chicago. But that solo record, called Outside Child, was a revelation – a reckoning with childhood trauma that became a defiant, rocking celebration of resilience and community. Drawing freely on blues, R&B, country and rock, Russell puts on the kind of live show that’s worth paying for. But this time around, you don’t have to, because she’s playing a free gig on July 27 at Rockefeller Park in Battery City, part of Lower Manhattan’s River and Blues Festival.
