In the 1950s and 60s, the one-act children’s opera Amahl and the Night Visitors was a holiday tradition on TV. The first opera ever written for television in the States, it told the tale of a poor, disabled boy who walks with a crutch and whose house is visited one night by three kings, who are following an enormous star to Bethlehem. Now, the group called On Site Opera is mounting a new production of Amahl and the Night Visitors, in which Amahl and his mother are staying at a soup kitchen and are visited by three homeless men who are on their way to bring gifts to the Christ child. The production actually takes place in the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, in Chelsea, and while most of the cast is professional, the opera’s chorus of shepherds will consist of a group of formerly homeless New Yorkers. Amahl and the Night Visitors by composer Gian Carlo Menotti will be staged in the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen by On Site Opera, Dec. 8-10.  Audience members are invited to bring a donation of non-perishable food items to be donated to the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. Volunteer ushers will be ready to receive your food donations upon arrival to attend the performance.
