Amaro Freitas at Le Poisson Rouge
March 5. 7PM. $26.78

The Brazilian pianist Amaro Freitas has just released a new album that offers a kind of musical journey down the Amazon, called Y'Y. And in order to evoke the sounds of the water, the rainforest, the Indigenous people of the region, and the often exotic wildlife, Freitas found that the usual piano sounds weren’t always enough. In his piece, “Uiara,” an Indigenous name for the pink river dolphins of the Amazon, Freitas uses an electric magnet to bow some strings inside the instrument, and uses adhesive tape to give other strings a more earthy sound. Amaro Freitas plays Tuesday, March 5, at Le Poisson Rouge.
