The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

The Overseas Press Club presents Seymour N. Siegel moderating a panel of journalists with questions for the Deputy Permanent Representative of Iran to the United Nations, Mehdi Vakil.

Levon Keshishian, _Al Ahram_, Cairo
William Otis, Associated Press, UN
Reinhard Sorge, United Press International

Many of the questions focus on the Middle East crisis and the Vietnam War; Ambassador Vakil is hopeful about a peaceful resolution to both but emphasizes that Israel has been intransigent in the past and that no annexation of territories should spring from an aggressive act. Mr. Vakil also speaks about the need to regulate the exploitation of the sea bed so that all mankind, and not just the superpowers, benefits. He enumerates some of Iran's past glories but stresses that today's Iran is a modern country with great economic growth and a desire to shed its recent colonial past.
