Amid Extremely Low Primary Turnout, Someone Wrote in Snoop Dogg
Less than 14 percent of registered Democrats bothered to vote in this month's mayoral primary, which Mayor Bill de Blasio won by a substantial margin. But his voters—of which there were 343,054—hardly tell the whole story of what happened on September 12.
The city's Board of Elections on Thursday released the full vote count, which includes all the write-in candidates. Here's a list of some of the people New Yorkers decided to throw their vote behind:
Michael Bloomberg received 244 votes, beating other ex-mayors David Dinkins (5 votes), Rudy Giuliani (5 votes), Ed Koch (2 votes), and Fiorello La Guardia (4 votes).
Christine Quinn received 82 votes.
Bernie Sanders received 20 votes.
Donald Trump (3 votes) just eked out a win over his son, Donald Trump, Jr. (2 votes).
Hillary Clinton (129 votes) posted a solid win over her daughter, Chelsea (2 votes).
Beyonce Knowles tied her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter (1 vote a piece).
WNYC's Brian Lehrer received 6 votes, soundly defeating Democracy Now! co-host Amy Goodman, who received 1 vote.
Writers Fran Leibowitz (sic), Emily Gould, Choire Sicha, Colsen Whitehead (sic), Kurt Anderson (sic), and Shaun King each scored one write-in vote.
Singers Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Patti Smith, Snoop Dogg, Bruce Springsteen and Yoko Ono each received a vote.
Whoopi Goldberg got one.
So did Howard Stern.
And so did Professor Minerva McGonagall.
Vote in the general election on November 7.
