Brooklyn-based Antibalas, or “bulletproof” in Spanish, has explored all kinds of funk, Afro-Cuban music, and extra-planetary cosmic jazz - and they draw heavily on the 1970s West African sound known as Afrobeat. In fact they were the pit band for the Broadway musical Fela, about the life of Afrobeat founder Fela Kuti. But Antibalas has also dipped into rock and martial arts soundtrack music as well - their last album was the kung fu-inspired Fu Chronicles. Antibalas is doing a four night residency at the Blue Note, with two shows each night from May 18- May 21.
