Arooj Aftab at Lincoln Center Out Of Doors

The Sufi singer and musician Arooj Aftab was born in Pakistan, but she’s based in Brooklyn, where she combines her vocals with live looping, electronics, and a select group of fellow musicians. Those vocals are very often built around Sufi poetry, and the music attempts to evoke a sense of stillness and openness. In this performance, recorded live in our studio, she’s accompanied by bass player Petros Klampanis in a song called "Suroor." Arooj Aftab performs on Wed. night, Aug. 7, with a small band (Maeve Gilchrist, Shahzad Ismaily, Gyan Riley and Greg Fox) at Lincoln Center Out Of Doors. Admission is free.
