Arooj Aftab – "Raat Ki Rani" (Weekly Music Roundup)

The Grammy-winning Pakistani-American singer Arooj Aftab has just released the first single from her next record, called Night Reign – that’s “reign” as in a king or queen’s rule. The single is “Raat Ki Rani,” which literally means “the queen of the night” in Urdu, but which also the name of the night-blooming jasmine flower. And the song does evoke a perfumed night in an indeterminate place and time.  Aftab’s vocals, shrouded in reverb, are accompanied by gently pulsing piano and percussion s, and a lovely Celtic harp solo.
