The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra has kept alive the tradition of Latin Jazz started, largely here in New York, back in the mid 20^th century. Under the leadership of pianist Arturo O’Farrill, the ALJO has extended that tradition by using things like turntables and incorporating political messages about immigration and the like. Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra celebrates the 40th anniversary of the beloved East Harlem Bomba y Plena ensemble Los Pleneros de la 21 (LP21), and the two big bands play together for a not-to-be-missed holiday musical extravaganza at the Hostos Center in The Bronx on Dec. 2.

Immigrants' stories have been unfolding on an off-Broadway stage in an uncommon way. One is of a doctor in her 40s who fled Zimbabwe. Another featured a Colombian woman who regretted leaving her homeland for the United States. A third entered into a marriage of convenience with an American after overstaying her visa, and then suffered a violent assault in the subway.
