Investigation into LaGuardia Skid Turns to Airport Operations

Federal authorities are taking a closer look into whether airport operations at LaGuardia contributed to the accident last month when a plane skidded off of a runway.

The National Transportation Safety Board has released its third update on the incident.

The investigation will include an analysis of the airport's procedures for clearing snow. At the time, Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye said the runway had been cleared "literally minutes" before the plane's landing. Now, the NTSB says the snow was last cleared 20 to 25 minutes prior to the plane's landing.

It was snowing heavily that day. Earlier, the pilots of Delta Flight 1086 told investigators that the brakes were set to "max" but the plane did not slow down as the aircraft veered toward Flushing Bay.

The Port Authority declined to comment.

One-hundred twenty-seven passengers and 5 crew members were aboard the plane, which was en route from Atlanta to New York City.

Authorities say 23 passengers suffered minor injuries.
