Bethany McLean, investigative journalist, contributing editor at Vanity Fair and the author of Shaky Ground: The Strange Saga of the U.S. Mortgage Giants (Columbia Global Reports, 2015), says the political battle over the fate of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac has left them unprotected in the event of another downturn and represents the riskiest area of the U.S. economy.
