Beatboxers Battle In Brooklyn To Be The Best

The beatboxing scene has come a long way since it first arose as part of the early hip-hop scene in New York City. Popularized by musicians like Doug E Fresh and Rahzel, the skill of mimicking bass beats and other sounds with just the mouth and voice has long been called "the fifth element of hip-hop," along with rapping, DJing, breakdancing, and graffiti. Now, beatboxers from around the world are battling it out in Brooklyn this weekend at the 10th annual American Beatbox Championships.
The contest is co-hosted by Kaila Mullady and Mark Martin, who perform as the duo Lightship. They stopped by WNYC to chat with host David Furst about beatboxing and why it is so compelling as a musical skill.
