The Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto was actually born here in New York, but she has Brazilian music royalty in her blood. Her father was Joao Gilberto, the hugely influential musician who pioneered the style known as bossa nova. Bebel has been making records on her own since the mid-80s, extending that lyrical, lilting bossa nova sound with elements of rock, jazz, and electronic music. But the album she’s releasing later this month is a return to her roots – it’ll be called Joao and is a tribute to her late father. Bebel Gilberto plays Aug. 16 at Le Poisson Rouge.
