The Symphony of Sorrowful Songs by Henryk Gorecki has melodies that are long, flowing, and melancholy; its emotional content is clear even if you don’t speak Polish. Beth Gibbons does not speak Polish, but the lead singer from the pioneering trip-hop band Portishead learned to sing this demanding role for a new recording of the Gorecki symphony. Her recording of Gorecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs in a performance conducted by the great Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki is now an album and a film, and that film is being screened twice, Monday night, April 1, at BAM.
