#3740: Beyond the Pale (of Settlement)
Music on this New Sounds comes from the area of Eastern Europe from Lithuania in the north to Ukraine in the south, including Poland and Belarus, from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, where the Russian Empire settled much of its Jewish population in the 19th century, or the Pale of Settlement. Listen to traditional music by Michael Alpert, who comes from an Ashkenazic family, and Julian Kytasty, whose parents are from Ukraine, from their recent release, “Night Songs from a Neighboring Village.” Alpert is also part of the klezmer revival supergroup, Brave Old World, and Kytasty is a bandura player/composer & singer. Hear some of their collaborative works along with music from the Canadian band, Beyond the Pale. Also listen to selections from the music theater piece, “A Night in the Old Marketplace,” a collaboration between New York trumpeter/composer/bandleader Frank London and lyricist Glen Berger (who later went on to be part of the infamous Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.) Plus, an exclusive performance by Polish composer, singer and multiinstrumentalist Mieczyslaw Litwinski, on a borrowed harmonium, in our WNYC studios from 1986. And more.
Record release for Michael Alpert & Julian Kytasty's “Night Songs from a Neighboring Village” is June 18th, at the Center for Traditional Music and Dance
