Big James Barrett started as an R&B singer, but then he joined the Golden Jubilees, who were part of an old regional tradition in eastern North Carolina called sacred soul. R&B paid better, but Barrett liked this proto-gospel tradition more. Last year, just before the pandemic, the band appeared in a tiny studio where a pair of producers had made an unusual field trip to document this sacred soul tradition. Big James Barrett and the Golden Jubilees contributed this song, “Use Me Lord.” Big James Barrett and the Golden Jubilees are part of the upcoming film and album called Sacred Soul of North Carolina. The premiere of this part of the film is part of our Weekly Music Roundup.
