The jazz pianist Bill Charlap is probably best known for his Grammy-winning album with Tony Bennett, a 2016 collection of songs by Jerome Kern. Charlap is an elegant interpreter of what’s come to be known as The Great American Songbook, having recorded albums devoted to music by George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, and many others. The New York native has been recording in recent years with his trio, but he’s doing a solo stint this week at Smoke. Bill Charlap plays July 17-21 at Smoke Jazz Club.
