The Haitian band Boukman Ekspereyans, a mizik rasin band from the city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, released their first album in 1991 and immediately got a Grammy nomination. And why not – their sound is a lively, high-octane mix of traditional Haitian music with rock and reggae. The band’s name refers to Dutty Boukman, the voudou priest who helped start the Haitian revolution in 1791, and to the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Boukman Ekspereyans have been regular visitor to the States over the past 18 years, and they play a free show tonight at Lincoln Center’s David Rubinstein Atrium.
