Brooklyn Middle Schoolers Launch Integration Council

WNYC News | Nov 26, 2019

New data show a plan to boost integration at some Brooklyn middle schools is making a difference.

Last year, School District 15 middle schools ended selective admissions and switched to a lottery. Students from low-income households got priority. The result: incoming sixth grade classes at multiple schools started looking more like the demographics of the district as a whole.

But as policy wonks crunch the enrollment stats, the students say they want to get to know the people behind the numbers. They're working with the advocacy group IntegrateNYC to launch a Middle School Integration Council.
