Chet Huntley on Journalism and His New Radio Program

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

Chet Huntley advertises a new five-minute syndicated "think piece" program for Horizons Communications. He discusses the profession of journalism and expressing judgment,

"...it is our function to maintain a lively sense of curiosity and inquisitiveness, to ask questions and to listen carefully. So in view of all of these things I therefore occasionally it is the function of a Journalist to exercise his judgment about a particular statement in the news or a particular development. So judgment, if you please, yours to consider, weigh, test, think over or even reject."

He then provides a sample recording on the "outbreak of intense student political activity" in American colleges.

[Pete Willet] of United Press International provides more information for radio stations who wish to purchase syndication rights.

The program is described in the biography Good Night, Chet:

"In September 1970, Chet went back to work as a newsman when he began broadcasting a daily five-minute, syndicated radio commentary for his co-owned Horizon Communications. He typed and recorded his commentaries on cassette, and mailed them for broadcast. The five-day-a-week program ran until March 20, 1974."
