Tenor sax player Chris Potter has built his substantial reputation not just on his ability to play his horn, but also for the constant element of surprise that he brings to his shows. He’s at the Village Vanguard all this week, where he recorded his recent album, Got The Keys to The Kingdom.  It included the old spiritual of that name as well as an Amazonian folk song, a bit of Brazilian pop, and an extended riff on a classic blues by Mississippi Fred McDowell called “You Gotta Move.” Chris Potter's ace quartet (featuring pianist Craig Taborn, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Marcus Gilmore) plays at the Village Vanguard, Jan. 2-Jan. 7.
