Christie Delivers State of the State, Taking Aim at Local and National Democrats

The Brian Lehrer Show | Jan 13, 2016

As Chris Christie continues his run for the GOP nomination for president, WNYC and NJPR reporter Matt Katz (the creator of The Christie Tracker) recapped the governor's sixth State of the State address.

The New Jersey Governor chose to give his speech just hours before President Obama gave his State of the Union address. Christie took the opportunity to take a shot at the commander-in-chief, telling those watching that the president's speech would be a "fantasy wish list by a President who has failed us."

But it was local Democrats that Christie really bearded for voting on Monday to put a constitutional amendment on the state ballot guaranteeing public pension payments, a move that he said would have to be paid for by New Jersey residents via tax increases.

Democrats claimed that New Jersey's economic growth will fund much of the pension payments along with tax increases for the rich, but Katz said that's probably not the case. He explained tax increases will have to be applied to other New Jersey residents, not just millionaires.
