Kenneth C. Davis, author of the Don't Know Much About the Civil War: Everything You Need to Know About America's Greatest Conflict but Never Learned and In the Shadow of Liberty: The Hidden History of Slavery, Four Presidents, and Five Black Lives, offers historical context on the White House Chief of Staff John Kelly's comment that it was "the lack of an ability to compromise that led to the Civil War."

"This was not simply a moral question for most of these men. It was a question of wealth and political power," said Davis.
