CMS Benefit Concert: Ava Mendoza, Joe Russo, Billy Martin at Le Poisson Rouge

The Creative Music Studio in Woodstock has been a community center of sorts for jazz and world music artists since 1971. On Dec. 11, a big benefit concert to support the Creative Music Studio has attracted Billy Martin of the trio Medeski Martin & Wood, drummer Joe Russo, poet Bob Holman, and many others. Guitarist Ava Mendoza, whose playing often seems to be right at the edge of what a guitar can do, is also on the program. Her new solo album, The Circular Train, shows another side of Mendoza’s artistry – this song, “Pink River Dolphins,” has a bluesy quality and is one of two songs on which she sings as well. Ava Mendoza plays Dec. 11 at Le Poisson Rouge, as part of the benefit concert for the Creative Music Studio.
