Community Fridge Arrives in Mott Haven

WNYC News | Oct 13, 2020

There's a new refrigerator at the corner of 141st Street and St. Ann's Avenue known as the Mott Haven Community Fridge.

Teachers at a charter school called The American Dream School have joined forces with Bronx Community Foundation to bring the new open-access refrigerator to the neighborhood.

Daniel Zauderer, a 6th grade teacher at American Dream, said the new fridge is open 24/7, no questions asked.

"Anybody in the community is free to use the fridge at any time they want, and anyone in the community is free to donate to the fridge whenever they can," said Zauderer. "Our motto is, 'take what you need, give what you can.'"

Zauderer said he surveyed 6th graders and found 40 percent of students' families said they've had to reduce or skip a meal to get by during the pandemic.

The Mott Haven fridge is one of many community fridges that have popped up throughout the city.
