Dan Friel (current Upper Wilds, ex-Parts & Labor) is one of the veterans of New York’s so-called noise rock underground. Now, noise rock sounds like a pretty forbidding term to some people but Dan Friel’s set up, of cheap electronics, twinkling Christmas lights, and mistreated amplifiers is totally charming. Joyful, and noisy as hell, but totally charming. And after all, that’s what earplugs are for. Anyway, under all the gleeful noise you’ll usually find something that’s actually built like a pop song. Dan Friel plays on Thursday evening, Sept. 9, at the Brooklyn club Mama Tried.
