New Orleans electro-revival producer and artist Dawn Richard seemed like she was on track to becoming a pop star – starting in the reality TV series Making the Band and working with everyone from rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs to indie rockers Dirty Projectors. But in recent years she’s been claiming her artistic space with pronouncements like "I am the genre" and stepping up to be a role model: "You never see women appreciated as producers and artists alike—especially Black women in the electronic space. The time is now for us... I wanna be the reason why a young Black girl from the South can be whoever she wants to be musically, visually, and artistically.”
Lately, Dawn Richard has been exploring increasingly abstract, electronic music - ranging from the neoclassical to the industrial. Her 2022 album, Pigments, is a collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Spencer Zahn in which each track is named after a color.
