Department of Investigations Says NYPD's Made Progress on Reforms

New York City's Department of Investigations has released its second annual report on the NYPD and its progress in implementing reforms suggested last year.

They include increasing transparency in chokehold cases, and cases where force is used. DOI Commissioner Mark Peters says the NYPD has taken action on many, but not all, of his office's recommendations. 

"The department has agreed to make changes in the training and do more de-escalation training, which we think will have a real impact in, over time, reducing the total number of instances that force gets used," he said. 

He said the department has also agreed to track when force is used, for the first time. 

In this interview, WNYC Jami Floyd talks with Peters about which recommendations the NYPD is acting on, and which it has rejected — as well as what DOI will be monitoring over the next year.
